What is the New Medicine Service?

The New Medicine Service (NMS) is a free NHS service that provides support for people with long-term conditions that are newly prescribed medicine to help improve medicines adherence; it is initially focused on particular patient groups and conditions.

Benefits of the New Medicine Service

The aim of this service is to improve patient adherence to treatment and subsequently reduce medicine wastage. Also, to reduce hospital admissions from adverse drug reactions by identifying them in the early stages of the treatment. During your consultations with the pharmacist, you will also be advised on lifestyle interventions that will help with the management of your conditions.

Which medicines are included in this service?

When you are started on a new medicine for Antiplatelet/Anticoagulant therapy, Asthma/COPD, Hypertension or Diabetes, you might be eligible for the NMS service. A member of our team will offer you this service and ask for your written consent to participate in the service.

How does the service work?

One of our pharmacists will provide you with some general information about your new medication and the service during the initial consultation and will arrange with you a phone or face-to-face follow-up consultation in 2 weeks time. During your follow-up consultation, the pharmacists will ask you about how you got on with your medication, explore any issues you might have encountered and provide relevant advice and support. The pharmacist will arrange a final meeting in 1-2 weeks time to ensure that you have a good understanding of your new treatment and that you aren’t having any adverse effects.

Next time when you start a new medicine, speak to a member of our team to check if you are eligible for this service.

Disposal Of Unwanted Medicines https://felkrispharmacy.uk/disposal-of-unwanted-medicines/ https://felkrispharmacy.uk/disposal-of-unwanted-medicines/#respond Fri, 26 Jul 2024 17:48:48 +0000 https://felkrispharmacy.uk/?p=6147

Disposal Of Unwanted Medicines

If you have unused/expired prescription medicines or medicines that you bought over the counter, just bring them to the pharmacy for safe disposal. This is a free service available to the public. It is not safe to put unwanted/expired medicine in domestic bins.

Stockpiling of medicines

Any medicine you return to the pharmacy cannot be used by the pharmacy again. It’s therefore very important that you don’t stockpile medication at home and only request medication that you need. Stockpiling is also dangerous as there is a possibility of mixing your new medicines with your old ones and it is also a safety risk to children and others who might take them. Every year over £300 million of NHS money is wasted by unused prescription medicines.

Safe disposal of medicines

Each year, large quantities of unused and expired medications are dumped into bins or flushed down toilets and sinks. The effects on the environment and human health are unclear but the evidence is pointing to the presence of chemicals from prescription and over-the-counter medications in the soil, drinking water and the surrounding environment. It is very important that you return unwanted medicines to a local pharmacy for safe disposal.

Speak to a member of staff if you have any questions about the disposal of unwanted medicines.
